Born in Surrey in 1962, Joanne
originally trained as a classical pianist at the Royal College of
Music, working for many years as an accompanist and teacher. Coming
from a family of artists, painting has always been an integral part
of her life but was not pursued seriously until 1990 when, living in
Putney, she stumbled across the Putney art school and enrolled in a
life class. The artistic desire revived, she undertook a two-year
foundation course and had her first solo exhibition in 1995. Since then her
career as an artist has gradually overtaken that of a musician
although she still teaches, and performs regularly with one of the
world’s only classical concertina players.
Joanne has exhibited widely, both in
England and abroad, at art fairs (AAF – London and New York,
Teddington and Battersea) and with galleries (Bernard Chauchet –
Thirteen Langton Street, Thompson’s, New Grafton). Her work hangs in
private and corporate collections throughout the world. Some notable
commissions include Sandy Lane Hotel, Barbados; Carlton Tower Hotel,
Knightsbridge and Churchill Hotel, London. Recent exhibitions
include The Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy of Art; Pastel Society
and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, both at the Mall
Galleries. Three of her images have been published by The Art Group
including a Tuscan landscape sold worldwide by Ikea. |

I paint in a diversity of styles
and am inspired by a wide range of stimuli. I get restless if I
follow the same path for too long and move between large and small,
controlled and experimental, landscape and abstract. Physically I
love the tactility of paint and the sensuous quality of the picture
surface. I frequently add collage to my work and explore
different
mixed media. In fact my inspiration often comes from a new material
– a piece of plasterer’s netting, a clay tile I can use for
mono-printing, even a tin of blackboard paint – a small spark which
gives rise to a whole new body of work.
My training as a classical pianist
finds parallel in my art. I often paint to music, which seems to
evoke an intuitive and immediate approach. I rarely plan or sketch
but launch straight into an idea – the painting, in a way, directs
itself. Every mark, shape or colour affects the whole and there is
constant readjustment in trying to arrive at the definitive version.
My recent paintings of the Alhambra and London Cityscapes explore
the wonderful media of watercolour and pastel. This method of
working has a particular quality of immediacy and vibrancy and
allows me to capture the essence of a place – a sense of light and
atmosphere.
My landscapes are a mixture of
memory and imagination and are more about creating a feel of a place
rather than a literal description. They are therefore open to
interpretation, inviting the viewer to conjure sky, sea and land
from the given vocabulary. The common thread running through all my
work is the resonant and emotive use of colour and a fascination
with the raw materials of painting. |
